Project Summary

This project is focused on the spatial and temporal distribution of the mid Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAEs) in the Romanian Carpathians and the correlation with other successions of similar ages, containing OAEs from the Tethys Realm. To achieve this project, significant successions from the Eastern and Southern Carpathians covering the Aptian-Turonian interval will be investigated. The main objective is related to the identification of the OAE1a (placed within the Barremian-Aptian boundary) and the OAE2 (the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary event). The successions will be also tested for the occurrence of some oceanic anoxic sub-events, such as OAE1b, OAE1c and OAE1d, distributed in the Aptian-Albian interval. To achieve the project objectives, a detailed field work will be done in the Romanian Carpathians to select significant successions and to describe them from lithological/sedimentological point of view. A detailed sampling is envisaged for complex analysis, such as chemostratigraphic (d13C and d18O investigations), micropaleontological, geochemical, mineralogical and paleomagnetism. These studies will finally evidence the spatial occurrence of mid-Cretaceous OAEs in the Romanian Carpathians. Besides, for pointing out the temporal distribution of OAEs, cyclostratigraphy will be achieved. The final gaol is the correlation of the identified OAEs in the Romanian Carpathians with Tethyan regions (especially Carpathian and Alpine ones).
